The Clothing Bank Mission

The Radford Clothing Bank provides good used clothing in an attractive and inviting atmosphere. Persons in need who reside in the New River Valley may shop for free clothing. Other shoppers pay $6 for a basket of clothes. In its 28th year, it is a mission of 15 area churches operated by a Board of Directors and over 300 volunteers. The Bank is a United Way partner and receives additional support from the participating churches, community organizations, grants and shoppers.

History

The Clothing Bank began in 1982 as a project of Grove United Methodist Church. The first year it served 56 clients. In 2007 it served 1,734 who qualified for free clothing.

The Radford Clothing Bank moved to downtown Radford Main Street in 2001, where additional space made it possible to incorporate the Stork Exchange within the Clothing Bank. In February 2007, the Radford Clothing Bank reopened in a beautiful new location at 2000 West Street, near Bisset Park in Radford. For a map and directions to our new location, please click here.

Volunteer

Volunteers operate the Radford Clothing Bank. The fifteen churches supporting the mission provide volunteers when the store is open on Thursday and Saturday mornings.

Other volunteers are needed to help operate the store and to assist with special projects.

  • sort, size, mark and "put out" clothing (Wednesday mornings, 10 - noon)
  • deliver bags of unneeded clothing to YMCA Thrift Shop
  • help with cleaning and repair
  • shovel snow
  • organize the Stork Exchange
  • setup, staff and clean up during August Kids.

New Volunteer Opportunity

Volunteers to staff the desk on a regular ongoing basis (at least twice a month) are needed as we transition to a computerized client-tracking system.
